20131005 Calvary GinSing Choir
You are invited to GinSing! 2013, Calvary Choir’s annual gala of gin tasting and wine sampling accompanied with delicious hors d’oeuvres. This elegant evening will include solo performances by the Choral Scholars along with songs by Calvary’s Choir.

GinSing! is the primary fundraiser for scholarships awarded by Calvary to four deserving young music students in the community. In addition to the monetary assistance the scholarships provide, Choral Scholars attain the experience of professional performance, as well as exposure to the historical wealth of sacred music. Involvement in liturgical practice provides opportunities for Scholars to engage in our community of faith.

St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea is proud to present Paddy Keenan in concert with guitarist Richard Mandel on October 6.

Celebrating his first album release in over a dozen years, Paddy Keenan makes a long awaited visit to the Monterey Peninsula. As Irish music critic John O’Regan observed, “In Irish music there are legends and then there’s Paddy Keenan.” Bursting on the Irish traditional music scene as the turbo engine propelling The Bothy Band, Keenan is widely regarded as the most accomplished & exciting uilleann piper today. His wild & unfettered ‘open’ style, has led his fellow Bothy Band member, Donal Lunny, to call Paddy ‘the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes.’ A recipient of the prestigious ‘Musician of the Year’ award from TG4, the Irish language TV station, Paddy is equally adept on the low whistle & can let it rip on a rollicking reel, while in the next breath, he is sublimely soulful in a haunting slow air. Performing with acclaimed Bay Area guitarist Richard Mandel, hearing this traditional master in a friendly, intimate setting will be a treat not to be missed.

20130922 Cell Talk

Premiere of UK Award-winning Play, Cell Talk:1410, on September 22 at Calvary, Santa Cruz

20130922 Cell Talk
Please come along to see the UK award-winning play, CELL TALK: 1410 by Calvary parishioner, Dana Bagshaw. The story of this play is drawn from the writings of two women from 15th century England: the highly regarded mystic Julian of Norwich and her younger contemporary Margery Kempe — a more controversial figure, both then and now.

Julian, who lives in a cell attached to a church in Norwich, welcomes a troubled Margery for several consultations. Meanwhile Margery persuades her husband John to take a vow of celibacy, so that she can become a pilgrim.

Matt Matthews, known from his work with Santa Clara Players, provides his excellent direction. Ali Eppy is perfect as Julian of Norwich, and Shannon Gilligan Hemphilll’s portrayal of Margery is powerful. Rick Kuhn adds his delightful characterization of John Kempe, Margery’s long-suffering husband.

“One woman rooted . . . and one wandering . . . beautiful and inspired” says Peter Oswald, who selected Cell Talk as winner of a UK playwriting competition held while he was resident playwright at the Globe Theatre.

Outdoor performances with live music from the period will be held on Sunday afternoon, 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Click here for directions.

Repeat performances:
Sept. 29: First Congregational, 900 High Street, Santa Cruz
October 6: St. Jude’s , 20920 McClellan Road, Cupertino
October 13: St. Francis, 1205 Pine Ave, Willow Glen

Suggested donations: $10 seniors/students, $15 general, at the door. Proceeds to benefit Calvary Church Choral Scholars Fund and their Homeless Ministry.

Baumer String Quartet

Baumer String Quartet in Concert at Church of the Good Shepherd, Salinas, on June 14, 2013

Baumer String QuartetThe Baumer Quartet, an affiliate of the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, will be performing a benefit concert at Church of the Good Shepherd on Friday, June 14, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.

Baumer is dedicated to educating and inspiring young musicians. As an outreach to youth in Monterey County, they launched the MCMW, a one-week, tuition-free program in June 2012. It was such a success that they are pleased to again offer the program this June, and it will be tuition-free!

Participants are selected after submitting an audition with two contrasting pieces or movements. Upon acceptance into the program, the students are given a music assignment that they are to prepare prior to the start of the Workshop. During their week of coaching they will practice and rehearse daily to develop a higher level of critical listening to achieve a higher performance standard. They will develop communication and interaction skills required for a string quartet. Finally, students will experience the joy of sharing music, working together as a team, and will discover a greater self confidence in performance, a heightened awareness of public performance and the audition process. The Workshop will conclude with performances by the students and the Baumer Quartet. The program is supported by grants, donations, and numerous in-kind donations. The proceeds of the June 14 performance will benefit the Workshop.

Please support the Baumer Quartet’s efforts and save the date—-June 14! Admission is $20 and youth 21 and under are free.
